Our GIS has provided us with a major new capability. We see it as an important resource for helping us to improve our effectiveness across all areas of policing.
Chief Superintendent Mark Wilson
Director of Intelligence
Leicestershire Constabulary is responsible for protecting nearly one million residents across Leicestershire and Rutland.
Leicestershire Constabulary recognised that by developing a better understanding of crime networks, it might be able to dramatically reduce crime in the county. A mass of intelligence was already available but fusing this data together in order to identify patterns and relationships presented a real challenge.
Initially, the mass of crime data way layered onto digital maps and then data from external sources was incorporated, creating a rich picture of the region. The connection between different crimes can be difficult to analyse in a report but with a map, networks are immediately visible and are used to help develop new strategies for reducing crime.
Leicestershire Constabulary has been able to extend its knowledge of how crime networks operate and can now plan operations more strategically. Having reliable information at its fingertips has saved valuable time, directing police resources to precisely where they are most needed.
