ESRI (UK) Flooding Seminar 2009
Flooding
Predict, Plan, Prepare & Protect
Using GIS for Effective Flood Management
Sept 8th, 2009
London
In response to the 2007 floods, Sir Michael Pitt's report recommended improvements in the UK's ability to predict and respond to such events. Responsibility for these actions falls on public sector organisations from local authorities to Central Government and extends in the private sector.
During this one day seminar, ESRI (UK) will explore the benefits of applying GIS to benefit the 'Predict, Plan, Prepare and Protect' response to flooding situations. This seminar will take place in London on Sept 8th, 2009.
Summer 2007 saw the UK's largest peacetime emergency since World War II - devastating floods which left half a million people without essential services, some 55,000 properties damaged and an estimated cost amounting to billions of pounds. Amongst over 200 major floods across the world that year, those in England were the most expensive.
As a result, the Government has announced a series of actions to improve the UK's ability to predict and respond to such events, improve the protection of people, property and services and minimise the future impact of flooding. The responsibility for implementing many of these actions now falls on different public and private sector organisations, from local authorities and emergency services to central government departments and critical infrastructure providers.
The power of GIS
Geographic information systems (GIS) can play a pivotal role in helping organisations meet their new responsibilities. GIS provides a user-friendly way of analysing, presenting and sharing information about previous floods and modelling future scenarios, combining data from a range of sources to create a comprehensive picture of where a flood could hit and what damage it could do.
As a result, a GIS system is the essential tool needed by organisations to:
- Predict future floods, enabling more effective risk management
- Plan and Prepare for flooding incidents, developing contingencies and effective responses
- Protect homes, businesses, transport networks and people from potential flood damage.
Through this ESRI (UK) Seminar you will see how GIS can provide the foundations for a fully integrated response to flooding - both across government and within individual organisations as a whole.
Key learning opportunities:-
- Demonstrate how GIS can aid organisations in meeting their flooding responsibilities, both individually and in a joined up way between agencies and organisations
- Utilise the opportunity for discussion with peers on best-practice approaches
- Speak to and question industry experts
