ESRI (UK) VISIONARY THINKING
Public Sector

Streamlining business processes

By applying geographical analysis to everyday tasks and processes, organisations across the public sector are able to improve the efficiency of all aspects of their operations.

From contact management, to individual task scheduling and workflow (for example, for health visitors or health and safety inspectors), GIS can highlight where unnecessary time and money is being spent.

More importantly, it also enables you to develop better – and greener – ways of working.

For example:

  • Hammersmith & FulhamHammersmith & Fulham how an Enterprise approach to GIS improved efficiency and helped to make time and cost savings across multiple departments.
  • Bexley CouncilBexley Council dramatically reduced the cost of school transport provision when it used GIS to map out precisely the level of resource needed to provide a school taxi service.
  • Daventry District CouncilDaventry District Council has saved £115,000 per year through managing the routes its refuse lorries take. This reduced mileage by 12%, eliminated overtime, decreased environmental impact and increased capacity.
  • Huntingdonshire District CouncilHuntingdonshire District Council has achieved significant improvements to a range of council services and substantial annual cost savings through its integrated data and GIS.

Putting GIS at the heart of operations

Significantly, these benefits aren’t only felt in local government.

The Forestry CommissionThe Forestry Commission has refined its processes by putting GIS the heart of its business and operations. The organisation relies on a constantly updated stock map, showing how its land is used, what types of tree are located where, and how mature the woodlands are. This stock map enables the Forestry Commission to create an accurate model of how its forests will look in the future, which helps to plan future activities – from felling, to planting to path clearing.

In this way, the woods are accessible to the public, retaining biodiversity whilst remaining a source of income through timber sales.

The Centre for Ecology & HydrologyThe Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) saved over £700,000 on the Countryside Survey, using mobile data capture linked to a central database.

Meat Hygiene ServiceThrough more flexible working and improved business processes,  GIS helped the Meat Hygiene Service achieve their Transformational objectives, improve standards of service and operational effectiveness.
