Smart mapping is an exciting new capability that will change how you make maps in ArcGIS. Whether you are an expert or novice, with smart mapping it's never been easier to create visually stunning maps that tell the stories you want to tell. This capability is currently available in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS for Server.

How does it work?

We've updated the map-making workflow based on the philosophy that making visually beautiful maps should be easy for everyone. Here is what you can expect:

Workflows analyse your data and suggest the best way to represent it.

We also suggest visible ranges so you'll see your data at scales that makes sense.

Smart defaults take the guesswork out of setting up many of the map properties.

You get to preview your styling choices on your screen.

Based on the basemap you select, we can automatically suggest and coordinate colours and other map styling.

Where do I Start?

The following blogs are full of tips and tricks and all you need to know to get started:

To make a new map from a CSV or text file, just drag it into the viewer, or go to Change Style in the layer context menu.

Try it for yourself

Open one of these maps and change the style to see how smart mapping brings the data to life.
