At ESRI (UK) we believe passionately that the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can make the teaching of geography – and other subjects – more compelling and engaging.  We know too that secondary schools now have to include GIS in their geography curriculum and, as we’re the UK’s leading GIS software supplier, we’re well placed to help.

This is why we’ve launched our new Schools GIS Programme. We’ve put together a brand new package of GIS software, maps, data, and teaching and learning resources at a special price for schools.

Our two GIS software products are DigitalWorlds and ArcView.

  • DigitalWorlds is an easy to use GIS based on ESRI technology and suitable for a school just starting with GIS.  It allows students to analyse data from the world around them, at a local, national or global level.
  • ArcView 9.3 is a more advanced GIS, completely compatible with DigitalWorlds.  Once a school has become familiar with GIS, it may wish to progress to ArcView to allow students to carry out more sophisticated GIS analysis.

Once a school has chosen its GIS, we’ll help teachers learn to use the software and integrate GIS into their lessons.  In myGIS, our online schools resource centre, there are bite-sized software tutorials, lesson plans and ideas. This will be a growing resource for teachers: we’re committed to developing new materials as the programme progresses.
