MapAction is a UK registered charity with a highly trained, highly skilled team of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) volunteers ready to deploy to a disaster area at a moments notice to provide emergency mapping at the scene. Usually based with the UN on-site coordination team or government coordination centre, MapAction, using the latest maps and satellite imagery, aims to depict the situation on maps as the crisis unfolds showing vital situational information to enable aid agencies to be more efficient in the distribution of aid. There are three components to the operational capability: a field base set up at the location of the disaster, field teams that seek information in the emergency area and they are supported by a UK base. The latest technology is intrinsic to the role. MapAction deployed to Sri Lanka after the tsunami, to Pakistan after the earthquake, and during this past year has deployed to support disasters in Suriname, Indonesia, Tajikistan and Kenya. In addition during the year MapAction has supported the UN in twelve other countries including China, Korea, Panama and Estonia.
