Welcome to ArcGIS and Esri UK.

Esri UK Technical Support have put this guide together to help you get you up and running as quickly and as easily as possible. Before we get started, let’s check that your machine meets the system requirements to be able to install the software successfully:

ArcGIS for Desktop 10.3.x

ArcGIS for Desktop 10.2.x

ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1

ArcGIS for Desktop 10.0

You can also run the Can You Run It utility which will check your machine against the minimum and recommended system requirements for you.


Create an Esri Account

  1. Go to https://accounts.esri.com/signup which takes you to the Esri Account creation page.
  2. Enter your name and email address into the required fields, and then click Create an Account.
  3. An email will be sent to the email address that you specified in step 2. From the email, click Activate your Account.
  4. You will be taken to a new page where you can enter the remaining account details, including a username and password. Fill these details in with the required information and click Create.
  5. Your account has now been successfully created and you will see the following screen asking you to sign in:

Connect to your My Esri Account

  1. You should receive an email from My Esri (service@esri.com) similar to the example below. Click Connect to my organization.
  2. You will be redirected to sign-in to your account. Enter your Esri Account username and password, then click Sign In:
  3. You now have access to the My Esri site for your organisation.

Download your Esri Software

This guides you through the process of downloading ArcGIS for Desktop from My Esri.

Prerequisites before downloading

  1. Valid licence – you must have a valid licence for the software you want to download from My Esri. Only those products you are eligible to download will be displayed.
  2. Broadband internet connection – some of the files are large so a broadband internet connection is required.

Downloading

  1. Open My Esri by going to https://my.esri.com/.
  2. If you are not already logged in with your Esri account, you will be taken to the My Esri login page. Enter your username and password (see Create an Esri Account).
  3. Once you are logged in with your Esri account, you will be presented with the Dashboard screen.
  4. Click on the My Organizations tab, followed by Downloads:
  5. Select Downloads from the list on the left-hand side of the screen.

    [alert]Note: some functions shown above may not be available to the user because they do not have sufficent permissions.[/alert]

  6. The Downloads screen will be loaded and will populate with all software downloads that the organisation is entitled to.

    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: If you have many products available for download and it’s difficult to find the one you want, you can click Show Filter Options for additional search capabilities.[/alert]

  7. Click the View Downloads button for the product you want to download, e.g. ArcGIS for Desktop.
  8. The desired products Download page is displayed.

    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: at this point you can also access the Get Started guides and other additional information by clicking on the appropriate hyperlinks.[/alert]

     
  9. Click the Download button for the required setup, e.g. ArcGIS for Desktop. 

    This will open the Esri Download Manager (which is a popup). If you get a message from your browser like the one below, saying that it has blocked a popup from my.esri.com, click Allow once to allow the popup to open.



    [alert]Note: if you are using Internet Explorer then you may be taken back to the download screen, and need to repeat steps 6-8 again.[/alert]

  10. A new tab will open on your browser called Esri Download Manager.
  11. Downloads are provided as executable (.exe) files and you can use the Esri Download Manager or your own download agent to download them.

    To use the Esri Download Manager, click on the yellow Click to download your file now button.

    To use your own download agent, click on the click here link.

  12. The Save window should open and you can save your .exe file(s) to the desired folder location. Click Save, and make a note of the download location you have specified.

    The Download Manager or agent will show the download progress. You can pause and resume downloads at any time, although we recommend trying to download each file in one go.

    You can minimise the window and check progress at any time but don’t close the Download Manager or agent.

  13. Once downloading finishes, click Exit on the Esri Download Manager or agent

Get your Authorization Numbers

Please follow the steps below to get your authorization numbers from My Esri.

  1. Open My Esri by going to https://my.esri.com/.
  2. If you are not already logged in with your Esri account, you will be taken to the My Esri login page. Enter your username and password (see Create an Esri Account).
  3. Once you are logged in with your Esri account, you will be presented with the Dashboard screen.
  4. Click on the My Organizations tab, followed by Licensing:
  5. Select Authorizations from the list on the left-hand side of the screen.

  6. The Authorizations screen will be loaded and will populate with all authorization numbers for software the organisation is entitled to.


    [alert]Note: If you have many authorization codes, as in the example below, this may take a short time to load.[/alert]

    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: If you have many products available for download and it’s difficult to find the one you want, you can click Show Filter Options for additional search capabilities.[/alert]

  7. Click on the product you require the authorization number(s) for. e.g. ArcGIS for Desktop Basic 10.1-10.3
  8. The authorization codes for the desired product should now be displayed.

    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: Authorization numbers are of the format: product prefix (three letters) followed by nine numbers e.g. ESU123456789. Desktop Single use licences start with an ESU prefix whilst Desktop Concurrent use licences have an EFL prefix.[/alert]

  9. Copy/paste or write down the desired Authorization Number(s) so that they are available when you come to authorize your software after installation.
  10. You are now ready to install the software (see Install ArcGIS for Desktop). 

Install ArcGIS for Desktop

This guide will help you install ArcGIS for Desktop.

Uninstall Conflicting Software

Before you install your new software, you should do some preparation work. This includes removing any stand-alone or third-party extensions and add-ins that you might have installed.

[alert]Note: Any extensions should be uninstalled prior to uninstalling the core software, including Esri UK Products such as ProductivitySuite and CrimeAnalyst.[/alert]

You also need to remove any older versions of ArcGIS products. You can use the ArcGIS uninstall utility to identify and remove older ArcGIS products for you (find it in the ArcGIS for Desktop downloads as Uninstall ArcGIS software prior to ArcGIS 10.x).

[alert class="alert-green"]Tip: ArcGIS for Desktop 10.3 can be installed on top of ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 and above. It saves you the time you would spend uninstalling it.[/alert]

Installing ArcGIS for Desktop

  1. Navigate to the folder containing the downloaded executable (.exe) files and double click the ArcGIS Desktop executable file. 

    The ArcGIS for Desktop Setup will begin to run. Click Next.


  2. Click the radio button next to I accept the license agreement. Click Next.


  3. Choose Complete (default) if you want to install all application features including the extensions. This option is recommended for most users.

    Choose Custom if you want to customize the features to be installed.

    Click Next.


  4. Accept the default destination folder to install ArcGIS for Desktop into or specify your own using the Change… button. Click Next.


  5. Choose the destination folder for Python, the default is C:\Python27\. If you choose your own using the Change… button then make sure the folder name has no spaces. Click Next.


    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: for versions 10.0 and 10.1, the button is called Browse…[/alert]

  6. The next screen gives you the option to take part in the Esri User Experience Improvement program. Further information about the program may be found here.

    Tick the box if you would like to participate in the program.

    Click Install to begin the installation of ArcGIS for Desktop.

  7. When the installation is complete you will see a screen confirming that ArcGIS for Desktop has been successfully installed. Click Finish.


  8. The ArcGIS Administrator Wizard will automatically open (see Authorize ArcGIS for Desktop).

    If you are installing v10.0 or v10.1 of ArcGIS for Desktop, you should ensure that you have also installed the latest service pack for the software.

    V10.0 SP5 may be found here.

    V10.1 SP1 may be found here, and once installed, you should then install the Quality Improvement Patch which may be found here.

Authorize ArcGIS for Desktop

  1. With the ArcGIS Administrator Wizard open, click on the radio button next to the product you wish to authorize (see Get your Authorization Numbers). This will activate the Authorize Now button. Click Authorize Now.


    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: if you have closed the above screen and need to return to it at a later date, go to Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.[/alert]

  2. The Software Authorization Wizard opens. Select I have installed my software and need to authorize it. Click Next.


  3. The Authorization Method screen displays. Select Authorize with Esri now using the Internet. Click Next.

  4. The Authorization Information screen displays. Complete the required details and click Next.


  5. The Authorization Information (continued) screen displays. Complete the required details and click Next.


  6. The Software Authorization Number screen displays. Enter the authorization code for the product and select Next.


    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: the authorization code will begin ESU followed by 9 numbers e.g. ESU123456789[/alert]

    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: If the Next button is greyed out (inactive) then ensure that there are no spaces before and/or after the license code, especially if you have copy/pasted codes into the wizard.[/alert]

  7. The Authorize Software Extensions screen displays.

    If you have not purchased any extensions then select the default I do not want to authorize any extensions at this time and click Next.

    If you wish to authorize any purchased extensions; select I have authorization number(s) to authorize one or more extensions, enter the authorization code next to the appropriate extension name and select Next when complete.


    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: If you have authorization numbers for extensions which are not shown in the default list, you can manually type the extension name into the first available box.[/alert]

  8. The Evaluate Software Extensions screen displays.

    If you wish to evaluate any extensions that you have not purchased; select the desired extension from the Available Extensions list, click the right arrow (-->) to move them into the Evaluation Extensions list and select Next when complete.


  9. The Authorizing Software screen displays and, after sending and receiving the authorization information, informs you that your software has been authorized and is now ready for use. Click Finish.


    [alert class="alert-green"]Tip: If the process fails with the 'Error: Unable to prepare your authorization', please request that the following site and port be allowed through your corporate firewall: http://service.esri.com/443[/alert]

  10. The ArcGIS Administrator screen displays. Click on Availability and confirm that you have successfully authorized your licenses.



    Click OK to leave the ArcGIS Administrator. You can reopen it at any time from All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator.
