Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) is poised to become Canada's leading authority on tornado tracking and research. A collaborative, university-wide project, NTP's goal is to detect, analyse and collect data for every tornado in Canada thereby mitigating losses and strengthening understanding of tornadoes in relation to climate change.

For every tornado the team investigates, terabytes of spatial data and imagery are being collected through satellite, aerial, drone and ground surveys. In order to meet the data storage, preservation and access needs of the project, a multi-level GIS solution was deployed, whereby a publicly accessible Esri Hub/Open Data site acts as a public-reporting tool for tornado and severe storm damage.This data feeds into an Operations Dashboard page that will present the data interactively to the public and the NTP Team.

Although this site leverages technology from across the Esri software suite, by bringing it together using Hub sites, the delivery is seamless. The first of its kind in Canada and one of the first among academic institutions, the site is a pivotal milestone for the Northern Tornado Project and a great example of the versatility and customisation of Esri's Hub.

Too often in many organisations GIS can appear to be sitting in the wings, looking on at all the other activities and initiatives taking place. The perennial challenge of ensuring GIS is part of these conversations and is engaged with the wider business can be a frustrating one.

The digital transformation programmes currently underway in many of our organisations present an opportunity to reset this engagement. This presentation will explore this new digital landscape and challenge how we do GIS. It will focus on the initiatives, strategies and opportunities that GIS can be part of and will challenge the audience to think about problems first, then solutions, and articulate these in a language that the business understands. To meet the opportunities of digital transformation, it will no longer good enough to do things right, we need to be doing the right things as well.

Using the Workforce App, we have developed an interface and a way of working where colleagues have access to their current workload and outstanding tasks on their mobile devices. This enables each staff member to balance their workload and find the most efficient ways for them to work. Efficiencies are realised through Task grouping (where specific equipment is needed) and Proximity sensing for en-route jobs. There is also significant time savings for operators within the council who route tasks through our internal network from the caller to the operatives.

The tasks which populate the Workforce app can be raised in 1 of 3 ways:

1. Static Maintenance Tasks are raised automatically, and in-line with a predefined logic which ensure work is only raised when it is required (considering different frequencies for different seasons).
2. Ad-hoc Jobs can be raised by managers by integrating directly with Workforce.
3. Customers can raise jobs through our CRM which sits on the Salesforce Platform.

There is a significant value to the jobs being recorded on this platform as it allows us to keep an accurate record of all our assets as well as what maintenance has been carried out. For the static maintenance tasks this is achieved by creating a feedback loop whereby Declines and Comments are automatically emailed to the appropriate colleagues for review and potentially updates.

This session will explore the approach and technology used by North Ayrshire Council to digitise our Streetscene operatives who are responsible for grounds maintenance tasks. As a council we have a vision to ensure that our colleagues are empowered, enabled and inspired to realise the benefits of digital. This project encompasses that vision and seeks to engage colleague who traditionally don't interact with digital resources as part of their day to day job.

The NHS is a major data creator in Scotland and is seen to have some of the best health service data in the world. Despite this, there is a huge amount of potential that remains currently untapped; large amounts of our data have spatial attribution and even some of the more basic issues around location of services and facilities are yet to be properly addressed (in some cases quite literally).

It could almost be seen as the final frontier for spatial information.

This session will outline the steps that have been taken to address the issues faced by the NHS whilst also detailing our progress to date and aspirations for the future.

Following a long-running equal pay dispute, settlements were offered to thousands of Glasgow City Council workers, mostly in facilities management. One of the possible consequences of these lump sum payments could have been an increase in unauthorised absences. The risk was that schools and other facilities would only offer reduced or critical level of services in catering, cleaning and other areas of operation. Using Survey123 and Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS, the council was able to manage staffing issues and provide key insights and real time level of services to executives and elected members of the Council.

The Property and Land Services division within Development and Regeneration Services identified an issue with the accessibility of the core Property data being used within the team. There were challenges with the IT infrastructure and a lack of desktop ArcGIS seats which meant the team relied on multiple spreadsheets and other reports to monitor the portfolio on for KPIs. The solution was to use FME and Operations Dashboard to provide a lightweight high level interactive view of the portfolio across the four main KPIs which are Condition, Suitability, Repairs Spend, Utility Costs.

These examples showcase how ArcGIS technology can be used as a contingency tool to assist in critical events that can affect services provided by any local authority. They also demonstrate how Dashboards can be used to present data to decision makers that do not usually use GIS technology.

Geospatial systems and data are essential in keeping Scottish Water flowing.

From asset / investment planning to operational management, regulatory reporting and emergency planning, spatial data and systems play a key role in the organisation.

In particular, the use geospatial data is driving insights on the age and replacement of key strategic water mains as well as generally looking at the performance of the water network. This allows us to target interventions to ensure our customers receive clean fresh drinking water with a high level of availability and quality.

With this enhanced overview we can make more informed strategic investment decisions about our assets and our service.
