Which train stations are at risk of flooding?

To identify train stations at risk of flooding we'll use a blend of open data and Esri curated data. Firstly, download Ordnance Survey's Open Map Local Vector data (we used grid squares SD and SJ for the Manchester area) and EA's Risk of Flooding data. Lastly, you can access the ArcGIS Living Atlas through ArcGIS Online, an Esri curated data repository, to add in Ordnance Survey's Boundaryline and Open Rivers data

Once the data is in your map, some data prep is required before conducting the analysis in the next step. Apply a filter to the OS Boundaryline data to only show the districts in your area of interest - in this scenario we selected 8 districts in Manchester. Next, combine the two train station shapefiles from Ordnance Survey into one manageable layer using the Merge Layers tool

Now the data is prepped, we can analyse which train stations are at risk of flooding. The Join Features tool is very powerful and we can use this for most of our analysis. Use this tool with the single train station layer and the filtered districts layer, this extracts the stations in our interest area. Next, to identify the stations that are at risk, use the Join Features tool again with the new layer and the flood risk data

Having identified which train stations are at risk of flooding, this map can be shared securely with internal and external stakeholders using a range of configurable apps (no coding required). Or, you can simply share the analysis results outside of ArcGIS by navigating to the item page and exporting to CSV, Excel, shapefile, and other formats
