The Graduate Scheme at Esri UK offered me a perfect chance to a gather a holistic view of the business and its customers. At the end of the graduate scheme I was offered a role within Professional Services as a GIS Consultant. Consultancy at Esri UK is a wide-ranging and interesting role, and often involves working on-site with customers across various industries and practices. This was a rotation I particularly enjoyed as it provided a great balance between technical GIS and customer interaction.
What can I do after the grad scheme?

Professional Services
The department which has taken the largest number of graduates at the end of the scheme is Professional Services (PS). Often working on-site with customers, PS consultants can undertake a variety of projects from installing and configuring Esri software, to creating web applications, to performing geospatial analysis.
As Esri UK continues to grow, so does our need for more PS consultants to support our customers in their GIS workflows.
Graduates who go into PS join as an Academy GIS consultant. Your time in the Academy is tailored to your career goals and allows you to develop the skills you will need to progress.
At the end of my 2 years in the Graduate Scheme I joined the Professional Services Academy. The Academy gave me the opportunity to focus on skills I needed to develop in Professional Services by shadowing other Consultants during projects. In 2018 I became a GIS Consultant in Professional Services, focusing on Enterprise Implementation and Automation. I work with customers all over the country, visiting new places, delivering projects and constantly learning different skills!
I credit the graduate scheme for providing a safe environment to learn, experiment and grow my confidence working in a professional space, especially when it was my first job. This then helped me move from the graduate scheme into Professional Services as a GIS Consultant and progress into a Senior Consultant role where I am now.
Sales
Our Sales team drives the success of Esri UK. From seeking out new opportunities, to growing and maintaining our existing customers, a role in Sales can be extremely rewarding.
Since completing the graduate scheme, I have moved into the Sales team as a Customer Success Manager, where I work with existing customers to help them be successful in their use of the ArcGIS Platform. The graduate scheme was a fantastic platform to build my career at Esri UK. I spent two years gaining valuable experiences across a range of departments throughout the business, enabling me to develop both my technical knowledge and professional skillset.
As GIS becomes an increasing focus for businesses across the UK, our Sales team regularly recruits from our graduate programme to find individuals who are committed to customer success.
Whether you prefer to be office-based or onsite working with customers face to face, there are a wide variety of Sales positions available for graduates at Esri UK.
While the majority have chosen careers in Professional Services or Sales, graduates are present in other roles across the business.
ArcGIS Localisation Team
The ArcGIS Localisation Team (ALT) supports the use and adoption of ArcGIS in the UK. From data and content services to product management, graduates are now filling a variety of roles within this team.
The Esri UK grad scheme was the ideal introduction to the workplace and GIS as an industry. It allowed me to dip my toe in different industries, and in various professional capacities. On the whole it broadened my perspectives on the types of roles that exist within a business, as well as giving me a grounding in GIS and the Esri platform.
Technical Pre-Sales
Our Technical Pre-Sales team works closely with the Sales team to provide demos of Esri software to new and existing customers. Our graduates who have joined Pre-Sales have now taken up leadership positions specialising in the use of GIS for specific industries.
Following the two year programme at Esri UK, I was then able to secure a full time role in Pre-Sales as a technical lead for the Utilities and Telecoms sector. I craft solutions for how we can enable Utilities and Telecoms customers to solve challenging real world problems, target where best to invest and strengthen their networks, and provide quality service to their own customers.
Marketing
Graduates in Marketing oversee and develop campaigns to spread awareness of the Esri and ArcGIS brand. They also help organise events such as our Annual Conference, hosting over 2000 people in London every May.
After the completing the programme, I took responsibility of the Media Maps team, who are dedicated in making maps for national news to raise Esri brand awareness. This was such an exciting role and a highlight of mine is seeing my map live on BBC Breakfast with a 2 million plus audience! Fast forward a year later, I have progressed my career down a more traditional marketing route and I am now a Marketing Executive where I build and deliver campaigns about Esri products.
