Illuminating the coasts of the British Isles

About the map

For hundreds of years, lighthouses have helped seafarers to navigate our coastlines and safely cross the seas.

The aim of this map is to shine a light on lighthouse construction through the years.

Through the use of an animation, the construction of the 288 current lighthouses and light vessels were shown through time.

Why it works

The animation uses time and range-enabled capabilities to symbolise when the lighthouses have been constructed.

Through a customised basemap and creative styling, the focus of the map was drawn on the British Isles and its coast lines. Surrounding countries have been muted and focus is drawn to the seas.

The fading effect on the buffer shown in the animation helps draw attention to the newly created lighthouses, while the already constructed stay in the background.
