Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the most well-travelled monarch in history, with 266 official overseas visits her 70 year reign. She has made trips to every part of the Commonwealth, visiting an impressive 117 countries in total. To celebrate this extraordinary achievement, we created a interactive timeline of The Queens overseas visits.
This interactive web application allows users to view the overseas visits on a timeline, or view all trips at once. The pop-ups are configured using Arcade to give information about each visit, such as the duration of the trip and who The Queen met whilst out there. The application is easy to use and has a simple yet effective design, with a glowing Royal Insignia used to mark each visit.
Instead of the Time option for the timeline slider, I chose the Numeric option and then set the field to the ‘Year’ field. This gave a much cleaner looking time slider with the year of the visit larger and more prominent.
I duplicated my Visits layer and then made use of the Style Effects. The top layer I kept as the Royal Insignia but the bottom layer I symbolised as gold points and chose a Bloom effect. This gave the final points a glowing effect.
Customised pop-ups were made using Arcade, to create a Text pop-up rather than the traditional table of attributes. Fields in the attribute table were referenced in the expression.
