About the map

Recycling rates within England have increased throughout the years, which is significant progress in the management of waste and resources. However, large amounts of waste are still being rejected for recycling each year for reasons such as contamination. Small amounts of contamination can ruin an entire batch of recyclables, with the rejected recyclable waste being sent to landfills. This web map explores the recycling behaviours of the population of each local authority for the financial year 2020-2021.

Why it works

This interactive web map allows users to search for their local authority and gain information about the recycling behaviours of the population. The pop-ups are configured to give information relative to the national averages to provide further context to the user. The web map is easy to use and its simplicity allows usability across a range of desktop and mobile devices.

Requirements

  • Data and software

    Esri UK created the map using ArcGIS Pro 2.9 and Map Viewer. The web application was created using Instant Apps. Data was provided by the Department of Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Office of National Statistics.

  • Analysis

    ArcGIS Pro 2.9 was used to create joins between tables and to calculate the percentage of rejected recyclables using the ‘Calculate Fields’ tools. Pop-ups were customised within Map Viewer using Arcade to display the data relative to a national average. The base map was styled to match the green colour scheme of the data layer.

  • Time

    The data processing did not take a long time, just ensure that your tables are formatted consistently to make sure that data is properly matched when joining tables. Depending on how comfortable you are with scripting and Arcade, the time spent customising the pop-ups may vary but there are plenty of online resources for sample scripts. Configuring the web application within InstantApps was quick and easy!

Tips and tricks

  • Customise your pop-ups

    Create informative pop-ups using Arcade to display dynamic text that is relevant to the feature you are selecting. Experiment with different colours and typography to help convey your information in an eye-catching way.

  • Dynamic Display

    Play around with different blending modes and visible ranges to control the amount of information the user sees at different extents. For example, at a smaller scale, only the choropleth map layer is seen. At a larger scale, a layer with roads is displayed with an overlay blending mode and local authority labels are visible. Showing all this information at once at a smaller scale can make your map look cluttered. Exploit the interactivity of web maps and ensure your cartography is functional and pleasing.

  • Configure the search tool

    Configure the search tool within InstantApps to search against your data layer. This allows users to search for their local authority, and have the pop-ups appear as soon as the extent zooms in on the chosen area. This improves the overall user experience of the interactive web map.
