Vehicle Fuel Consumption in 2021

View Map

About the map

This map displays fuel consumption across England and Wales in 2021. It uses census data to show the data on a per-person basis and give us an idea of where people are using more fuel.

We were inspired to create this following the decision to scrap Phase 2 of HS2. We wanted to explore whether there is a link between a lack of public transport and fuel consumption. Some of the areas of high consumption on A roads and minor roads, like East Anglia and Powys, are rural areas that often have less public transport.

Why it works

Behind the scenes, a lot of data engineering had to be done to view the appropriate data and in units that would be easier to understand for viewers. This resulted in three layers, for each individual road type which were clipped to the road network to almost feel like a vein network.

Removing the basemap and instead opting for a simple background emphasises the data and decreases clutter. Also using colour theory to match the purple background with other elements helped a lot!
