The Hills of Donegal 3D Map Tour
Maps Make Sense for Salzburg 2015 Winner
Daragh McDonough was inspired to create this 3D view of The Hills of Donegal after seeing a 3D visualisation of Basecamp at Everest. The webmap of Everest was created after the earthquakes in Nepal and used a Web Scene to show various locations around Basecamp area. Daragh began to experiment with 3D capabilities and was impressed with the realism of what he created, "I was amazed at the realism of Errigal when I started looking at it on the PC screen and moving about the 3D world and exploring the mountain from different angles. Suddenly I’d created my first web Scene and then another and another etc."
Donegal is famous for its Iconic mountains and ranges. The iconic shape of Errigal and the Sliabh Liag sea Cliffs define the Donegal landscape, they form part of an ever growing Tourism industry and are key views along the Wild Atlantic Way driving route. By adding a Web Scene to traditional maps and GIS information Daragh has created the next best thing to being there.
With a personal love for The Hills of Donegal, combined with his interest in technology and GIS Daragh was able to create a Story Map that was meaningful to him.
